The talk schedule for The Last Hope has finally been announced and can be found here. The schedule is currently sitting at a healthy 97 talks (thats right, ninety-seven) spread over the three day event. Featured talks include the ever boisterous Jello Biafra, the ever interesting Kevin Mitnick, Steven Rambam (as long as he doesn’t get arrested before his talk this time) and a newcomer to the conference, maker-of-things, Adam Savage.

The Last Hope is running from July 18-20 at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. I’ll be there, hope to see you!

Check it out, Joey and Kristine are launching a new website about the young Austin Geek scene, should be good times for all!

This summer we will be featuring Mini-Documentaries about various geeky and cultural events we run into.  So stay tuned and keep your eyes and ears ready.

Joey recently made it down to the San Antonio workshop of a mad electric vehicle scientist. Pics here. Sustainability has never been so sexy - are those Crager rims? Nice!

So I am putting together a little space for all of the spring 2008 videos/performances done in the ACTLab, you can watch them at ACTLab.tv

Making something awesome is only half the battle - then you have to do something with it.  Whether you are looking for money or good ol’ fashioned internet fame, you need some type of marketing strategy, right?  Right?  This coming June us Austinites are going to have a great opportunity to sit down and bask in the knowledge of product managers and other assorted marketing types at the first ever Product Camp.  In the spirit of Bar Camp, this is an “un-conference” put together and run by the participants.  More info is available at http://barcamp.org/ProductCampAustin.  The ACTLab gang will have a contingent in attendance - hope to see more of you there!

I am blogging from my new nokia n800 internet tablet. With any luck this new mobility will translate into blogging awesomeness.

Botnet Antibiotics

April 29th, 2008

It looks like someone has been reading Brandon’s work!

Slashdot today is looking at the latest and baddest botnet, Kraken and how it might be stopped using a few tricks from our own Brandon Wiley. This is linked back to a previous discussion on the same topic back in February where Curious Yellow is brought up in the discussion (a quick search for “yellow” will find it for you).

Brought to you first by the ACTLab!

This Saturday is World Intellectual Property Day, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Intellectual_Property_Day.  Go out and pirate something!  Or even better, publish something to the web under a Creative Commons license, more info here.

Peer to Peer networks have had a huge impact on how New Media studies have progressed, how individuals consume and companies think about their markets. This talk gives you low down on how peer-to-peer networks function, how they are being used and how they came to be.  Brandon Wiley (2nd to talk) gives a stunning history of the P2P scene, below is his presentation.
