The Internet is an amazing source of information of all kinds.
You can research a paper, download a picture of Alicia Silverstone,
and yes, you can find pirated software without too much trouble.
In addition to finding pirated software on public newsgroups,
many people trade ftp sites by email or over IRC. (Trading ftp
addresses is probably the way David LaMacchia's
sites were discovered.) BBS's can also be receptacles for 'warez.'
U.S. users can also download pirated software from ftp sites overseas
(and vice versa), further blurring the lines of the law.
There are public forums for software, pirated and otherwise; please
consider the
phreaking/cracking.
