The History of the Virus

Where do viruses come from? Despite the fact that people are the creators of these parasites, viruses seem to take on a life of their own once they are released into the computer world. Who ever thought that a program with about 50 lines of code would be so damaging that it would bring an entire nation's Internet connections to a standstill?
