I am going to attempt to start, or start attempting my first project. Here’s my preface:
I have worked at the Starbucks on campus, in the Union for over a year now. Ever since last spring I have been asking all the employees to save the gift cards that people use up whenever they come to our store. So, if there is no more money left on them and they want us to throw them away, I have kept them. I have a collection now of probably over 500 cards. I wanted to do something with them because it made me absolutely irate that we just threw them away. I decided early this fall that was a good start to a potentially pretty cool first project for EFH.
I thought about how I wanted to use them and had many ideas float in and out of my head, but I think I’ve landed on making a sculpture in the shape of a 3D infinity sign. I chose this because of a few reasons:
- If people were to recycle these cards instead, they could be used and reused over and over again, endlessly.
- Sometimes it seems to me that people are never going to change, and will continue to throw away…everything they can forever.
- It’s one of my favorite symbols and I think it will be a challenge to get it just right.
So today I’m going to play around with the cards and how I can manipulate them, so later I will hopefully have some pictures up to show you how that went.
so this is what i’m trying right now –
oven at 350 degrees and 1 card in there for 5 minutes.
Results: the card is totally pliable! and easily formed into a cylindrical figure. which is good news. I don’t think that this is what I’ll want all of the cards to do, and for the other ones I’m thinking about getting a blow torch, but this is a good sign. I have some pictures I will edit in after I upload them.
for now i’m hungry and want to make dinner. so more progress tomorrow, or soon.
