Milt Hinton(1910- ) John Hinton, a.k.a. The Judge,
grew up in Chicago, and played double bass there through the early
thirties. From 1936 to 1951, he was a member of the Cab Calloway band wher his full
tone and tremendous drive became a mainstay of the band's rythem section.
After leaving Calloway, he worked freelance in New York.
He has recorded with such prominent artists as Count Basie and Louis Armstrong's
All Stars. He accompanied Bing Crosby on his final tour to Europe.
Hinton's impressive sound and his sense of time were linked with a consummate
feeling for harmony.
