Mexico, September 1995
To everyone who participated in the International Consulta
Dear Companeros and Companeras: This past September 13, the International Consulta convoked by the
EZLN ended. It gives us great pleasure to inform you that the Consulta,
National as well as International, has been successful thanks to your
interest and international solidarity.
The total number of international votes received was 81,775, with
45 countries participating, from all five continents.
Men and women from the whole world, young and old, of different
races and religions, participated in the Consulta with all of their hearts,
conscious of the importance of being in solidarity and of expressing their
opinion to help Mexico make profound changes that will open the way for
democracy, justice and liberty. Based on this reflection, we consider the
results to have more of a qualitative than quantitative value.
The organization and participation in the Consulta has been an act
of international solidarity with an EZLN that is respected and loved; with
an EZLN that is listened to for having risen up against poverty, injustice,
oppressing authoritarianism, and corruption. The international
participation in the Consulta permitted us to confirm that the people of
the world are united in the struggle against neo-liberalism and that
together they struggle to defend themselves from the decisions and
impositions of their respective governments.
The international community has reaffirmed through the Consulta
that the EZLN and the people of Mexico are not alone, that behind them
there are many men and women all over the world who support them and
make the Zapatista cause their own.
The call to the Consulta by the EZLN is an example of democracy in
practice. The Mexican government should learn from this example, and
should understand also that Mexico urgently needs a real and profound
democratic change, and only in this way can a war be avoided.
Its clear that the Consulta has been successful, that it has been
very much worth all of the effort, but the situation in Mexico and
particularly in Chiapas continues to be very difficult, the danger of a war
is still latent. For this reason we ask that you remain vigilant over the
present and future events, and that in future actions we can continue to
count on your support.
You have made the Zapatista cause your own because ultimately there
is only one cause of justice and liberty in the world, and it is that which
binds us together in mutual and universal solidarity. We want to thank you
for your determined and generous solidarity, without which the path to
justice and liberty that the Mexican people have decided to undertake a
long time ago would be more difficult and painful. This hard road to walk
down is now illuminated and guided by the EZLN and accompanied by
international solidarity. We have faith that the horror of war and
injustice will remain behind buried in this long path toward a better and
more just world. Finally, we want you to know that you can count on our
solidarity in the moment that you need it, in the struggles that you face
for democracy, liberty, and justice.
